This recognition highlights BYON’s strong regional presence and its ability to scale a structured, hospitality-driven property management model across multiple Southeast Asian markets—setting a new benchmark for the short-stay accommodation industry.

Redefining Cross-Border Short-Stay Hospitality

Established in 2018, BYON Premium Suites & Hotels, formerly known as The Flash Group, is an award-winning hospitality and short-stay property management group operating across Malaysia and selected international markets.

With over 1,000 units and 1,200+ rooms under management, the company delivers professionally managed premium serviced suites and hotel-style stays for business travellers, families, digital nomads, and leisure guests.

The ASEAN Records recognition reflects BYON’s ability to successfully scale a cross-border model, managing a total of 1,180 units across Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam through a combination of direct operations and regional partnerships.

Building a Scalable and Structured Hospitality Model

At the core of BYON’s growth is a disciplined, system-driven approach to hospitality management. The company combines hotel-standard service with the flexibility of modern serviced living, supported by in-house operational teams, standardised procedures, and transparent management systems.

Property owners benefit from structured onboarding, real-time reporting through a dedicated owner portal, and proactive asset management strategies designed to optimise occupancy and long-term value. Guests experience consistent, well-managed stays supported by 24/7 customer service, housekeeping, and on-ground operational teams.

This model has enabled BYON to achieve a proven occupancy benchmark of 80–90% across key properties, alongside strong guest satisfaction across major global booking platforms.

Expanding Across Southeast Asia with Strong Industry Presence

BYON’s regional expansion reflects a deliberate growth strategy built on partnerships, operational consistency, and market adaptability. Through collaborations with regional partners in key cities such as Phnom Penh, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City, BYON has established a scalable cross-border presence while maintaining operational standards.

The recognition was represented at the STRA Forum & Expo 2026, held at Hextar World Empire City—one of Malaysia’s leading platforms for the short-term rental accommodation (STRA) industry, bringing together stakeholders to drive innovation, collaboration, and industry development.

BYON’s active participation reflects its role as both an operator and a contributor to the growth and professionalisation of the regional STRA ecosystem.

The achievement was received by Ms Mavis Yap, Chief Executive Officer, together with Mr Melvin Yeep, Chief Operating Officer, and Mr Eddy Kwan, Chief Business Development Officer, in recognition of their leadership in driving BYON’s growth, operational excellence, and regional expansion.

Voices of Leadership

Reflecting on the recognition and its broader significance, Ms Mavis Yap, Chief Executive Officer of BYON Premium Suites & Hotels, shared:

“This recognition reflects the scale of what we have built across Southeast Asia, with 1,180 units managed across Malaysia and regional markets through both direct operations and strategic partnerships.

Our cross-border model is not simply about expanding into more markets, but about strengthening collaboration across ASEAN to drive tourism growth. Through this approach, we aim to bring more international travellers into Malaysia while supporting the wider regional travel ecosystem.

At the same time, maintaining consistent quality across countries remains a key priority. This is achieved through structured SOPs, continuous team monitoring, and the integration of technology to enhance coordination and operational efficiency across markets.

As the short-stay industry continues to evolve, we support greater regulation and industry standards, and we remain committed to contributing to the development of a more structured, trusted, and sustainable STRA ecosystem across the region.”

Driving the Future of Short-Stay Hospitality

BYON’s ASEAN Records achievement underscores the growing importance of structure, transparency, and scalability in the short-stay accommodation sector.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia Officiates ASEAN & ASIA Tourism Records with Meneroka Malaysia Bersama WIRA & MANJA in Support of Visit Malaysia Year 2026

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia Officiates ASEAN & ASIA Tourism Records with Meneroka Malaysia Bersama WIRA & MANJA in Support of Visit Malaysia Year 2026

The ASEAN Tourism Records and ASIA Tourism Records, together with the nationwide engagement initiative Meneroka Malaysia Bersama WIRA & MANJA, were today formally officiated by YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, in a ceremony marking a strategic alignment with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

The ministerial officiation and signing ceremony represents a significant milestone in positioning Tourism Records as a complementary national framework that supports Malaysia’s tourism development agenda through structured, factual, and verifiable documentation of tourism assets.

From Regional Launch to National Alignment

The ASEAN Tourism Records and ASIA Tourism Records initiatives were first launched on 22 October 2025 during the ASEAN Records Gala Night in Kuala Lumpur, officiated by TYT Tun Seri Setia Dr. Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka.

Today’s ministerial officiation by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) formalises the initiatives’ role in supporting national tourism priorities and reinforces their relevance under Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

This endorsement underscores the Government’s recognition of Tourism Records as a value-adding platform that documents and presents Malaysia’s tourism strengths through objective, measurable, and non-commercial records, rather than conventional promotional narratives.

A Structured Approach to Tourism Documentation

According to Gillian Ooi and Eldrick Koh, Directors of ASEAN Records and ASIA Records, the Tourism Records initiatives were developed to provide deeper context and appreciation of destinations by presenting tourism value through verified facts and historical documentation.

“Tourism Records are designed to complement national tourism efforts by offering visitors and stakeholders a clearer understanding of what makes a destination meaningful — through authenticity, heritage, and measurable significance,” they said.

The initiatives focus on recognising and documenting non-commercial tourism assets, including:

  • Natural and ecological heritage sites
  • Historical and cultural landmarks
  • Publicly accessible tourism attractions
  • Community-based and heritage-managed destinations

This structured documentation supports heritage preservation, sustainable tourism development, and informed destination discovery.

Nationwide Engagement Through Meneroka Malaysia Bersama WIRA & MANJA

The Tourism Records initiatives are implemented alongside Meneroka Malaysia Bersama WIRA & MANJA, a nationwide engagement programme designed to journey across all 13 states of Malaysia.

The programme promotes tourism appreciation through:

  • Record-based storytelling
  • Cultural interaction
  • Community participation
  • On-ground destination engagement

By bringing records directly to communities, the initiative aims to strengthen local pride, enhance tourism literacy, and encourage meaningful participation in Malaysia’s tourism ecosystem.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Regional Tourism Leadership

The officiation by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture reinforces Malaysia’s position as a regional leader in championing tourism authenticity, heritage preservation, and sustainability.

Through ASEAN Tourism Records and ASIA Tourism Records, Malaysia’s tourism assets are positioned not only for domestic appreciation, but also for greater visibility at ASEAN and Asia levels, supported by credible documentation and verified records.

The initiatives will continue to support Visit Malaysia Year 2026, encouraging both domestic and international visitors to explore Malaysia through a deeper understanding of its diverse destinations, cultural richness, and shared heritage.

An Unforgettable Tapestry of Drumming Traditions

The historic performance brought together a rich and diverse array of percussion instruments and drumming traditions, including:

  • Malay Kompang Drums
  • Oriental Drums
  • Indian Traditional Drums
  • Golden Drums, Red Drums, African Drums, Japanese Taiko Drums

The Impact of Rhythm: Drumming With Purpose

Teachers and community leaders who have adopted Bai Shiyin’s method have reported transformative outcomes:

  • Improved student discipline
  • Peaceful conflict resolution in schools
  • Stronger focus, creativity, and collaboration among children
  • Greater sense of inclusion and belonging across communities

Through this 11,520-strong performance, the organisers demonstrated how music and rhythm can be powerful tools for cultural diplomacy, emotional healing, and social progress.

A Cultural Milestone for the ASEAN Region

The success of this record-breaking event lies not just in numbers, but in the deeply human values it represents: unity in diversity, cultural pride, and the universal language of music.

By bridging Malay, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, African, and other percussion traditions, the event sent a powerful message of harmony, resilience, and hope — especially important in the post-pandemic era.

The 11,520-drummer performance is not just a world-class spectacle. It is a living symbol of what can be achieved when art, purpose, and people come together.
