The Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) proudly marked a monumental milestone in regional green mobility with the completion of the ASEAN UNITY DRIVE—a record-setting convoy spanning 10,432 kilometers across 72 cities in 9 ASEAN countries over 22 days. This landmark initiative has been officially recognized by ASEAN Records as: “ASEAN’s First and Longest Multi-Nation EV Convoy Led by a Nationally-Produced EV”
The achievement was officiated at the Malaysia Auto Show 2025, in the presence of YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, who witnessed the official record certificate presentation.

The ASEAN Records certificate was officially presented to Mr. Azrul Reza Aziz, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MARii, and witnessed by YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, marking a significant moment for Malaysia’s leadership in automotive innovation.

“This record is not just about the distance covered,” said Mr. Azrul. “It’s about breaking through boundaries, fostering partnerships, and driving forward a greener future for ASEAN.”
A Trailblazing Regional Drive
Traversing Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, the convoy was led by Proton’s eMas EV, highlighting Malaysia’s position at the forefront of sustainable and autonomous vehicle development.
This groundbreaking expedition demonstrates the technological strength, resilience, and collaboration potential across ASEAN member nations—promoting not only the capabilities of homegrown EV technology but also reinforcing regional cooperation in the clean energy transition.

Heroes Behind the Wheel
The success of this ambitious journey would not have been possible without the dedicated convoy team, who braved unpredictable terrains and long-haul drives. The four lead drivers representing Malaysia’s excellence in endurance and skill were: Mohd Adib Bin Mohd Azam, Justin Mah Mun Ming, Kavindran Vasanthasegaran

These individuals embody the spirit of ASEAN unity and innovation, and their determination has inspired countless others to pursue the path of progress.
Looking Ahead
As the region shifts towards electric and autonomous mobility, initiatives like the ASEAN Unity Drive serve as powerful catalysts in building awareness, promoting technological advancement, and fostering a united ASEAN identity.
MARii, in collaboration with its strategic partners, aims to continue breaking boundaries and driving change across Southeast Asia.
