ASEAN Records is proud to officially recognise Zoo Negara Malaysia for achieving two significant regional milestones in the wildlife conservation and zoological sector:

Highest Number of Births & Hatchlings of Nationally Native Wildlife by a Single Zoo (450 specimens across 5 animal classes, January 2023 – August 2025)

Highest Number of Registered Participants in a Volunteer Program by a Zoo Over 5 Years (45,944 participants, January 2020 – July 2025)

These achievements reflect Zoo Negara Malaysia’s sustained commitment to biodiversity conservation, animal welfare, and meaningful public participation in wildlife stewardship.

Advancing Wildlife Conservation Through Successful Breeding Programmes

The first ASEAN Records recognition highlights Zoo Negara Malaysia’s outstanding success in the breeding and hatching of nationally native wildlife, recording 450 births and hatchlings across five animal classes within a span of less than three years.

This milestone underscores the zoo’s effective conservation strategies, professional animal care, and scientifically guided breeding programmes aimed at preserving Malaysia’s native fauna. The achievement contributes directly to national conservation goals and strengthens Zoo Negara’s role as a leading institution in regional wildlife sustainability.

Building One of ASEAN’s Largest Zoo Volunteer Communities

The second record recognises Zoo Negara Malaysia’s exceptional scale of community engagement, with 45,944 registered volunteers participating in its volunteer programmes over a five-year period.

This achievement reflects the zoo’s success in fostering public awareness, education, and hands-on involvement in wildlife conservation. Through structured volunteer initiatives, Zoo Negara has empowered citizens of aged 16 years and above to actively contribute to animal care, environmental education, and conservation advocacy—strengthening the connection between society and nature.

A Milestone Moment of Recognition

The recognition was officially presented on 22 October 2025 during the ASEAN Records Gala Night 2025 at the Andaman Grand Ballroom, Kuala Lumpur.

The recognition was received on stage by Datuk Rosly Lana, Deputy President of the Malaysian Zoological Society, representing Zoo Negara Malaysia and its governing body.

In reflecting on the achievement, Datuk Rosly Lana shared:

“Thank you to our amazing staff, officers, zookeepers, volunteers, and supporters who made these milestones possible. Together, we’re creating a brighter future for wildlife.”

About Zoo Negara Malaysia

Zoo Negara Malaysia is managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organisation established to create the nation’s first local zoo for Malaysians. Officially opened on 14 November 1963, Zoo Negara has grown into a globally recognised zoological institution.

Spanning 61.53 acres and located just 5 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur city centre, Zoo Negara houses over 4,028 specimens from 318 species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Over the years, the zoo has transformed into an open-concept zoo, with more than 90% of animals housed in spacious, naturalistic exhibits designed to reflect their native habitats.

Zoo Negara Malaysia continues to evolve its practices—moving away from traditional zoo concepts toward conservation-focused, education-driven, and animal-centric approaches.
