Liza Diño, first Filipino recipient of the highest civilian honor from France

Liza Diño, first Filipino recipient of the highest civilian honor from France

LIZA Diño, a staunch supporter of Philippine cinema who continues to espouse the cause of Filipino filmmakers even after her tenure at the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), was awarded by the French Ministry of Culture with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (National Order of Arts and Letters). She was given the rank of Chevalier (Knight), a first for a Filipina in the field of cinema.

The former FDCP chairman and Sunday Times Magazine (STM) columnist was cited for her achievements in drawing the world’s attention to quality Filipino filmmakers and movies during her service at the council. In return, she promoted French and world cinema to the Philippine audience.

During the awarding ceremony at the ambassador’s official residence in Makati, French Ambassador to the Philippines Michèle Boccoz cited the many projects Diño led that benefitted both countries.

“On your first official trip to France to attend the Cannes Film Festival to accompany your Philippine delegation, you met with CNC (Centre National du Cinéma et de l’image animée or National Centre for Cinematography (CNC)) of France to discuss possible areas of cooperation and soon after, you signed a cooperation agreement” Boccoz said.

Boccoz also recognized Diño’s efforts to host the Policy Forum on Government Support on Film Productions in 2018 — showed Filipino legislators and stakeholders how the French levy fund created self-sustainable funding for the French film and audiovisual industry — for them to understand the possible assistance that can also be implemented in the Philippines.

The list also includes the Philippines’ participation in the biggest animation festival, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (MIFA), and how Diño worked hand-in-hand with the French embassy and its regional attaché in Singapore to host an animation teaching workshop in Manila, with no less than the experts from Annecy.

To top it all, Boccoz cited the efforts of Diño in paving the way for the signing of the co-production treaty between France and the Philippines, which she said “would open doors for Filipino films to the grants and funding tools available to French films.” Though the treaty has yet to be finalized, the French ambassador thanked the former FDCP chairman for championing what could be a great achievement for Philippine cinema.

“You really worked hard for that, and the representatives of different agencies and CNC can all attest to your commitment,” Boccoz said.

“Your energy, your talent, your intensive work have been recognized by the French professionals and by all French institutions,” the envoy added.

In her acceptance speech [full copy of which is available today on her column “The Future is Creative,” on page C4], Diño said that the award acknowledges not only her work but also the power of cinema to connect people from different cultures.

“I believed that in forming authentic relationships with colleagues, partners, and collaborators, I could get them on board to help me in my vision of an empowered and strong film industry. This was how this fruitful collaboration with France blossomed into impactful cooperation that bridged Philippine and French Cinema together,” Diño said.

Advocates for the Philippine cinema — including award-winning directors Brillante Mendoza, Carlitos Siguion-Reyna and Bibeth Orteza; actresses Bela Padilla and Angel Aquino; and public servants and film industry advocates Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Quezon City First District Rep. Juan Carlos “Arjo” Atayde, and Pangasinan Fourth District Rep. Christopher “Toff” de Venecia — witnessed Diño’s knighthood.

The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is considered the highest civilian award given by France to individuals who have significantly contributed to furthering the arts in France and around the world.

Diño is the first Filipino chevalier awardee for cinema and is second only to Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh to be knighted in the field for Southeast Asia.

Asean bloc to hold first joint military drills

Asean bloc to hold first joint military drills

South-East Asian nations have agreed to hold their first-ever joint military drills in the South China Sea, Indonesian officials said Thursday, as tensions grow over China’s increasing assertiveness in the region.

“We will hold joint military drills in the North Natuna Sea,” Indonesian military chief Yudo Margono said after a meeting of Southeast Asian defence chiefs in Bali, state news agency Antara reported.

They will take place in September involving all 10 members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) bloc and observer member Timor-Leste, he said.

That would include junta-ruled Myanmar, where the military has overthrown a civilian leader and overseen a bloody crackdown on dissent that has resulted in wide-ranging US and EU sanctions.

Margono said the exercises will focus on maritime security and rescue, and will not involve combat operations.

“It is about Asean centrality,” he said.

The bloc’s members have held naval drills with the United States before but never military exercises as a bloc on its own.

The announcement comes after Washington called on Beijing to stop “provocative” behaviour in the disputed waterway after a near-collision with a Philippine vessel and a Chinese fighter pilot’s dangerous manoeuvre near an American surveillance aircraft.

Chinese vessels have also occasionally intruded into the Indonesian-claimed waters of North Natuna where the drills will take place, prompting protests in Jakarta.

China says most of the South China Sea is its own despite competing claims from other Southeast Asian nations including Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Beijing’s ships have patrolled the area and when confronted have invoked China’s so-called nine-dash line — an area it claims but is contested by its neighbours — to justify its alleged historic rights to the waters.

At a summit last month, Asean leaders discussed “serious incidents” in the South China Sea and ongoing negotiations for a code of conduct aimed at reducing the risk of conflict there.

Asean has long been decried by critics as a toothless talking shop, and its charter principles of consensus and non-interference have hamstrung its ability to take action.

The bloc will hold its next leaders’ summit in Indonesian capital Jakarta in September. – AFP

Sarawak flagpole to be tallest flagpole in the country

Sarawak flagpole to be tallest flagpole in the country

The Sarawak government has unveiled plans to construct the nation’s tallest flagpole in Petra Jaya, Kuching. This monumental structure will proudly hoist the state’s flag, symbolizing Sarawak’s heritage and achievements. According to The Borneo Post, insiders have revealed that the proposed flagpole will stand an impressive 99 meters tall, with an estimated project cost of approximately RM30 million.

The strategic location for this remarkable flagpole is near the Tea House or Fort Margherita, within close proximity to the State Legislative Assembly Complex. Surpassing the current tallest flagpole in Malaysia, situated in Kuala Lumpur’s Merdeka Square, the Sarawak flagpole will reach a height of 4 meters higher, making it a remarkable sight to behold.

Sources report that the flagpole’s erection serves as a tribute to Sarawak’s unwavering commitment in safeguarding its rights and privileges during the formation of Malaysia. The Borneo Post is diligently gathering additional details about the project, including its anticipated commencement and completion dates.

The current highest flagpole in Malaysia, erected in 1989, stands at a towering height of 95 meters. Positioned at the southern end of the iconic Merdeka Square, this flagpole marks the historic spot where the Union Jack was lowered, signifying the end of British rule, and the Malayan flag was raised for the first time on 31 August 1957. Remarkably, it holds the distinction of being the twelfth tallest flagpole globally, trailing the Belagavi flagpole in India, which soars to a height of 110 meters. The title for the world’s tallest flagpole presently belongs to the 201.952-meter flagpole in Egypt.
